Sandburg Board of Trustees Holds October Meeting

The Carl Sandburg College Board of Trustees approved funds to complete a variety of protection, health and safety projects on the Main Campus in Galesburg during its regular monthly meeting Thursday evening.

The funds will cover re-roofing on the Center for Manufacturing Excellence; the addition of a sidewalk from the Student Center to the CME; the replacement of entry doors to Buildings B-C and D; and the replacement of an air handler in the College’s server room. Work on the projects, estimated at $932,000, is expected to take place next summer and fall.

The Board also approved the tentative 2019 property tax levy. Equalized assessed valuations (EAVs) have been increasing in the College’s district for several years, and a 3 percent increase is anticipated for levy year 2019. The Board passed a tentative operating tax levy of 47.86 cents per $100 of EAV, a 0.45-cent increase in tax rate from the previous year. This is consistent with the College’s intention of maintaining a high-quality educational experience without significantly changing the tax rate for many years.

The Board also moved to renew the College’s health insurance plan for employees through BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois and to continue the employee dental and life insurance plans through Principal Financial Group.

Ellen Burns, dean of career and technical education, gave an informational presentation on the CTE department. Burns came to Sandburg in August after working for almost 11 years at BNSF Railway, where she held a variety of union positions before spending most of the last seven years there as a company officer in the engineering department.

Burns discussed employment trends related to areas of instruction in the CTE department, which includes programs such as administrative office professional, automotive technology, agriculture, information & communication technology, manufacturing and welding. She also highlighted the work of Sandburg’s Corporate & Leisure College, which focuses on community education, corporate training and youth camps.

In other business, the Board approved the following:

• Employment of Cassandra Wallace as coordinator of scholarships and donor relations, effective Nov. 1.
• Employment of Teslin Penoyer as office assistant for math and natural science/academic support, effective Dec. 1.
• Resignation of Amy DeBoever as benefits manager, effective Sept. 25.
• Resignation of Makenzie Perryman as administrative assistant to the director of marketing & public relations, effective Sept. 30.
• Unpaid leave of absence for Thad Jackson, audio video production specialist, effective Sept. 23, 2019-Feb. 29, 2020.

The Board’s next scheduled meeting is 7 p.m. Nov. 21 on the Main Campus in Galesburg.
